I Built My Girlfriend an App for Valentine's Day
Software for one evening with one person. It still mattered.

It's February 13th. I don't want to do dinner reservations. I don't want to buy roses. I want to give her something she'll remember.
So I built her an app.
It's called Between Us. Seventy-five questions for couples, organized into rounds. Some are playful ("what's a song that makes you think of us?"). Some are deeper ("when did you know?"). You take turns. You can play in person, or with a shared code from across the country.
I started Friday night. Shipped it Sunday morning. We played it Valentine's Day evening.
At one point she asked me a question I'd written and paused. "I didn't know you thought about that." Neither did I, until I wrote the question.
The shelf life
Here's the thing I didn't expect.
The app had a shelf life of about two weeks. A couple hundred people played it. A few couples I know sent me tiny messages afterward. "This was so nice." "We needed this." "We actually cried."
And then it faded. No one opens it now. Not really.
That's okay.
I grew up believing software had to scale to matter. If it's not a million users, it's not real. If it's not a unicorn, what's the point. That belief made me start a hundred things and finish none of them, because nothing ever felt big enough to deserve finishing.
Between Us broke that belief. It was an app for one evening with one person. It mattered.
What it unlocked
Once you've made something small and sweet for someone you love, you start seeing opportunities everywhere.
My mom was caring for everyone in her life and losing track of her own health, so I built her a thing for that. My yoga students were fumbling through Hanuman Chalisa PDFs during class, so I built them an app. A studio owner I respect was trying to text her students and getting tangled in marketing platforms, so I built her SMS.
None of these are venture-backable. All of them are real.
Software for one person is a gift. Software for one moment is a poem. You don't need either of them to scale. You need them to land.
